Anti Snoring and You

Anti snoring is something you crave, so that you (and your partner) are able to finally get a good nights sleep.  But what anti-snoring remedy works, and what doesn't?

First:  Causes of Snoring

Before we talk about how to combat snoring, we need to discuss some of the possible causes of snoring.  They include sleep apnea, your jaw and tongue relaxing too much all the way to your sleeping position.

Being overweight can cause sleep apnea, the most deadly of the sleep disorders.  At the very least, being overweight contributes to snoring problems.

Anti Snoring Devices

Anti snoring devices bridge the gap between not snoring at all and a sugical solution for the nightly cacophony.  They use various means to re-position your head, jaws and/or tongue so that they don't vibrate.

These can take the form of an anti snoring pillow, a CPAP chin strap or a mouthpiece.  What works for one person might not work as well for another.

For example, if you sleep on your side, an anti-snoring pillow won't help you as much as it would a person who slept mostly on their back.

Another example is if you are snoring because your nasal passageways are partially blocked (and you resultingly breath through your mouth), nasal strips would be more of a help than a chin strap.

So the moral here; it's not enough to know  that you snore -- you also need to know why you snore.

Sleep Apnea and Anti Snoring

One thing you need to be aware of is this:  sleep apnea is not "just" snoring.  While "regular" snoring can certainly effect your health by not letting you get the rest you need, sleep apnea can actually be deadly.

The best anti snoring device is weight loss, as the majority of people suffering from sleep apnea are overweight.
